COMMUNITY


Uplands members have a strong sense of community.    Throughout the year Uplands gives back to the community in many different ways.  Here are some of the ways:


GIFT CERTIFICATES

  • During the year, we issue between 400-500 gift certificates which benefit many local businesses fundraising efforts, along with donating to local schools, hospitals, service groups, other golf clubs, local sports clubs and our own Club events.  

LOCAL AMATEUR GOLF 

  • the Club's golfing professionals are involved in junior, amateur and professional golf as well as developing beginner golfers through clinic experiences and mentoring;
  • proud host to numerous University of Victoria Junior Vikes and Vikes Performance Tour events, Zone 5, City and Provincial events.

ALEX A. CAMPBELL CONQUER CANCER CLASSIC - MAY

  • Supports Vancouver Island Lodge through Canadian Cancer Society;
  • Provides low cost housing for up to 2,000 Island cancer patients per year, as well as nursing supervision and volunteer driving services;
  • 2017 is the 30th anniversary year;
  • Has raised $1,000,000 over the past 30 years;
  • Donations have provided upgrades to emergency call services, a shuttle van, new carpets, new kitchen appliances, repaired the deck etc.

BAYVIEW PLACE CARDTRONICS OPEN - JUNE

  • Host of the Thrifty Foods Youth Golf Clinic;
    • Encourages local kids interested in golf/encourages kids to become interested;
    • Provides kids the opportunity to learn from the Vikes;
    • Encourages leadership, physical activity, and the opportunity to take part in the Open and see the possibilities of a future in golf (passes included in registration fee);
  • Supports Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island (2015);
    • Open picks a charity;
    • Raised $31,575 in 2015.

HEART TOURNAMENT - JULY

  • Since 1978, makes it the longest running charity tournament in BC;
  • over $2,500,000 raised to benefit RJH’s Cardiac Care Unit/Heart Program through Victoria Hospitals Foundation;
  • provides new equipment such as External Pacemakers, recording system for Electrophysiology Lab, and Critical Care Beds for the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

HUGH CARBERY PRO-AM - AUGUST

  • Benefits Victoria Hospice;
  • Raises over $7,500 a year ($17,000 in 2016; $6,000 in 2014).

UVIC CLASSIC - AUGUST

  • Funds raised help towards costs for the UVic golf teams.

CLEWS CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT - SEPTEMBER

  • Benefits Victoria Hospice Society;
  • Began in October 2012 with 28 players – has grown to 45-50 players;
  • Raised $54,000 over the past 5 years;
  • Includes a silent auction and a dinner only option for non-golfers;
  • In 2014 Adilynn Clews became youngest fundraiser at 4 day’s old – raising $16,000 that year.

WOMEN’S CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON - DECEMBER

  • proceeds raised go to the Mustard Seed Food Bank for turkeys for Christmas hampers (started by past member June Beattie);
  • last year (2016) raised $1,335 more than any year.

STAFF CHRISTMAS PARTY RAFFLE - DECEMBER

  • proceeds raised go tothe Mustard Seed Food Bank;
  • approximately $1,200-$1,300 raised over the past two years.

PACIFIC NORTH WEST GOLF ASSOCIATION 

  • An alliance with this golf association supporting amateur golf.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY

  • Uplands Golf Club contributes towards fundraising efforts for Multiple Sclerosis and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada which raises approximately $130,000 each year through various fund raising efforts.

CERTIFIED AUDUBON CO-OPERATIVE SANCTUARY

  • First semi-private golf course on Vancouver Island to become a Certified Audubon Co-operative Sanctuary;
  • Includes water conservation & quality management, wildlife & habitat management, chemical use reduction and environmental planning;
  • Encourages efficient  and responsible care and maintenance of natural habitats/ecosystems present on the course;
  • Educates our Club & community members on the importance of preserving the environment.
